February 2, 2026 — Android Police reported: Google is testing a new feature in Gemini officially named "Bring your AI chats with you." The feature's core is to let users take conversations accumulated in ChatGPT — by uploading a ChatGPT‑exported conversation file, users can migrate historical chats into Gemini.
Testing details shown in the article indicate the migration process is straightforward: users first use ChatGPT's export function to obtain a JSON file containing conversation content, message roles and timestamps; they then upload that file in Gemini's settings or import interface. The Android client shows import progress and previews of imported conversations, indicating which elements were preserved and which may be missing or require manual adjustment.
Screenshots and descriptions from Android Police emphasize data‑mapping details — the system attempts to preserve "user/assistant" roles, message times and text formatting (for example code blocks and blockquotes). But limitations remain: some third‑party plugin outputs, subscription‑only features or complex media attachments may not transfer fully. Google includes compatibility notices in the interface listing fields that may be lost and offering manual correction options.
The report notes Google aims to lower the barrier for switching between AI platforms, especially for users with extensive ChatGPT histories who want to continue in Gemini. Android and the web are listed as the first platforms to receive the feature, and some users will be pushed test builds in the coming weeks.
From a product perspective, the move is more than a migration tool: it converts data accumulated on other platforms into retention opportunities within Google's ecosystem. Android Police also observed that imported conversations are included in Gemini's search and context references, improving continuity and personalization in subsequent interactions.
Google's privacy guidance was also reported: during import the system asks users to confirm authorization, explains the import file's source and use, and provides an option to revoke. Android Police reminds readers to check exported JSONs for sensitive information and, if necessary, clean them locally before uploading.
The feature turns "switching AI" from a technical operation into more of a relocation: keeping the furniture (historical chats), making an inventory (compatibility notes), and trying to reproduce the old layout in the new home (Gemini). Android Police says that if Google expands support for more platforms and complex attachments, the migration experience will become even smoother, which is especially attractive to heavy ChatGPT users wanting to try Gemini.
