According to 9to5Mac on January 20, 2026, Apple has reached a deal with Google to bring Google's Gemini generative AI capabilities to Siri. The upgrade will be rolled out in stages: a smaller push in iOS 26.4 and a broader integration in iOS 27.
The report lists more than eight specific features, each intended to shift Siri from a “voice command” interface into a multimodal assistant with persistent memory.
1) Conversational understanding and multi‑turn tracking (validation begins in iOS 26.4). Siri will maintain longer context chains so users won’t need to repeat named entities or revisit earlier questions. For example, after asking about a travel itinerary, a user could follow up with “move dinner to 8:00 PM that day,” and Siri would map the time to the previously mentioned date.
2) Long‑form text and email summarization (iOS 26.4). Gemini gives Siri generative summarization capabilities for articles and emails, quickly condensing long messages or webpages into 3–5 bullet points. It will allow users to “reply with a draft” in one tap and offer suggested texts in three different tones.
3) Photo and camera visual understanding (iOS 27). Siri will be able to read the screen or camera view directly, generate image descriptions, extract searchable tags, and even draft social posts based on image content — a substantive upgrade for accessibility and photo management.
4) Spotlight and system‑level generative answers (iOS 27). Search will no longer be limited to keyword lookup; Spotlight can call Gemini to produce consolidated answer cards that merge information from mail, messages, calendars, and web pages to provide action suggestions or summaries.
5) Real‑time transcription and translation (rolling out gradually). Calls and voice memos will gain more accurate live transcription and multilingual translation, with Siri automatically detecting languages in conversation and offering instant suggestions.
6) Smart notifications and point condensation. System notifications will be consolidated by AI — for example, compressing many push notifications into a “three things to do today” summary — reducing interruptions and improving perceived efficiency.
7) Developer APIs and third‑party access (iOS 27). 9to5Mac notes that Apple will open some interfaces for developers to call Gemini’s generative capabilities, while maintaining strict controls over permissions and privacy.
8) Privacy and inference options. Apple emphasizes options for local inference and cloud processing; users can choose in Settings whether to send inputs to the cloud for more powerful generation, and Apple will add clearer permission prompts and data‑use transparency.
Initial improvements aim for low latency and controllable power usage; some complex generative tasks will remain cloud‑based to avoid significant battery drain or device heating. 9to5Mac says the first experiences will arrive via developer and public betas: the interactive conversation and text summarization in iOS 26.4 are the first visible changes, while iOS 27 is expected to deliver visual understanding and system‑level generative answers to more users in a later major release.
