On October 13, 2026, Google officially opened its flagship large model Gemini 4 Argon to developers, enterprises and paying users worldwide. After months of falling behind and internal adjustments, Google released this new-generation frontier model, which the company says leads the industry in complex workflows, coding, legal, finance and cybersecurity. The model was made available for testing to select cybersecurity partners on September 30 and has now been fully deployed across the Gemini app, APIs and the Antigravity programming tools. User tests show a clear split: some praise its long-task and knowledge-work capabilities, while others point to shortcomings in coding consistency and product experience.

Details

Gemini 4 Argon is a multimodal inference model built on a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, supporting text, image, video and audio input, with both context window and output limits reaching 1,000,000 tokens—significantly larger than the previous generation. The company emphasizes its core advantage in "deep work": the ability to stay focused across long, multi-step tasks, reduce repetition and boilerplate, and provide more direct answers.

Main capabilities and internal uses include:

Complex software engineering and agent coding
Enterprise knowledge work (legal, finance, tax, etc.)
Cybersecurity defense and vulnerability remediation
Scientific reasoning and long-video understanding

Google has already used Argon internally for tasks such as accelerating YouTube comment processing, debugging drone physics simulators, and discovering and fixing security vulnerabilities. Early enterprise testers include Deloitte, LexisNexis, Ambience Healthcare and Isomorphic Labs.

Benchmark highlights (combined from Google and independent evaluations):

Vals Index (knowledge-work composite) ranked first, about 68.9%
DeepSWE v1.1 (long-horizon real-world software engineering) about 77.9%, ahead of many competitors
Leading results on AutomationBench, Vals Finance Agent, Harvey Legal Agent and others
Strong performance on long-context GraphWalks and some multimodal tasks

Shortcomings remain: on command-line/agent coding tasks such as Terminal-Bench and parts of FrontierSWE, Argon trails Claude Opus 5.5 or GPT-6 Astra. Independent index provider Artificial Analysis places Argon close to GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1, but overall slightly behind Claude Opus 5.5.

Pricing and availability:

API introductory pricing (through Nov 30, 2026): input $2 per million tokens, output $10 per million tokens, with a 95% discount on cached inputs. After that the price will double to $4/$20.
Compared with GPT-6 Astra (about $10/$50) and some Claude flagship tiers, Argon is competitively priced.
Available to Google AI Pro (about $20/month) and Ultra subscribers via the Gemini app and Search AI Mode; Ultra users can also access Antigravity; developers and enterprises can connect via the Gemini API and AI Studio. Free and Plus users currently cannot access it directly.

User tests: mixed reviews

Early users and reviewers are sharply divided:

Positive feedback centers on:

Strong writing and structured editing abilities; some professional writers say it excels at long-form ideation and rewriting.
Reliable for knowledge work and research-style tasks that require cross-domain retrieval and multi-step reasoning.
Stable long-context handling and sustained output, suitable for generating large codebases or documents.
Relatively friendly pricing, with some developers acknowledging its cost-effectiveness.

Criticisms and shortcomings include:
