On June 1, 2026, DuckDuckGo said in a statement that it has made interface and accessibility adjustments to its publicly announced "no‑AI" search experience, aiming to make it easier for users to choose search results that do not include AI-generated content.

Specific changes include making the "no‑AI" option more prominent on search pages and in settings, and providing an easier-to-install and use extension entry for desktop browser users. DuckDuckGo noted that Chrome and Firefox users can now use a browser extension to set the "no‑AI" mode as their preferred search option or switch to it quickly, continuing the company’s earlier approach to browser extensions.

The company said that in recent periods traffic opting for the "no‑AI" experience has risen significantly, prompting DuckDuckGo to move the option from deeper settings to a more discoverable location. Engineering changes include simplifying toggle logic, providing prompts in the search box or results page, and adding a direct-access button in the browser toolbar via the extension to reduce the friction of switching across multiple steps.

DuckDuckGo has long marketed itself on privacy and non-tracking; the "no‑AI" option addresses a different demand: users who want results produced by traditional websites, original authors, and media rather than content automatically generated or rewritten by large models. The company said the update is both a product-design response and a direct reaction to a growing market preference for verifiable information sources.

For efficiency-seeking younger users, the new entry shortens the path from search to obtaining "non-AI" results. The article notes that the addition of on-page prompts and an extension button gives users a clearer choice in their search experience: they can continue using the default blended search or quickly switch to the "no‑AI" mode emphasizing traceability and human-created content.

Industry observers say DuckDuckGo's move has two meanings: first, it meets a clear demand among some users for "non-AI" information, differentiating the product from mainstream search engines; second, it provides a user-controllable filter in an environment where AI-generated content is widespread and factuality is mixed. DuckDuckGo did not disclose specific growth percentages in the statement, but said "no‑AI"–related traffic is climbing.

For those wanting to try it, DuckDuckGo's approach is low-friction: whether finding the "no‑AI" switch on mobile or desktop or placing the mode in the browser toolbar via the official extension, users can switch with a few clicks. This design detail also reflects the company's emphasis on the user decision path at the product level.

As the search market's focus on privacy, verifiable content, and countering misleading generated text heats up, DuckDuckGo's usability tweaks for "no‑AI" become an interesting case study of how search engines seek differentiation and self-preservation amid the AI wave. For ordinary users, the most immediate change is clearer choice; for content creators and media, it means there may still be audiences that prefer original work amid the flood of machine-generated content.
