August 19, 2026, Cursor, an AI coding company now formally part of SpaceX (operating within the SpaceXAI division), launched a new code hosting platform Origin. Positioned as an alternative and collaboration complement to GitHub, the platform supports repository hosting, in-browser browsing and editing, Pull Request processing and other full development workflows. Origin is available in an early preview to paying Pro, Teams and Enterprise users, emphasizes two-way synchronization with existing GitHub repositories, and plans to add "agent-native" features to build a broader application ecosystem.

Platform details

Built on the standard Git protocol, Origin's core features cover traditional code hosting needs:

Repository management: Users can create new repositories directly from Cursor's Codebase tab, and clone, push and pull via the Origin CLI or standard Git commands. Repository URLs take the form cursor.com/codebase/organization-name.
Code browsing and search: Supports browsing and searching team repositories in the browser.
Pull Requests: Full support for PR creation, timeline viewing, diff review, commenting and merging. PRs in synchronized repositories can be synced bidirectionally in real time — comments in Cursor will sync to GitHub and vice versa.
GitHub interoperability: Users can connect existing GitHub organizations and selectively sync repositories. GitHub can remain the source of truth while Origin serves as a parallel working copy; pushes still default to GitHub. Icons distinguish locally hosted and synchronized repositories.

In addition, Origin integrates Vercel (PR preview deployments), Depot and Buildkite among other apps, and supports one-click connections from a repository's Apps tab. Cursor emphasizes the platform is "designed for agent scale": cloud agents can directly clone, branch, commit and open PRs against Origin repositories.

Origin is currently in early testing, not available to free users, and enterprise administrators can opt out. Cursor said more agent-native features and an app ecosystem will roll out over time.

Release context and strategic intent

Cursor, previously known for its AI code editor and rapid rise through agent-driven programming automation, was acquired by SpaceX in 2026 in an all-stock deal valued at about $60 billion. The launch of Origin marks a key step in Cursor's expansion from an "AI coding tool" to a "full development platform." The official changelog notes the platform is starting with foundational features and aims to deeply integrate code hosting with AI agents so developers can complete the loop from writing and reviewing to deployment in one environment.

The timing coincided with an extended GitHub outage; some observers saw Origin as a timely response to developers' "reliability anxiety." Cursor stressed that Origin is not a forced replacement but a parallel option to lower migration barriers.

Potential impact: reshaping development workflows and platform competition

1. Impact on developers and teams Origin embeds code hosting directly into the Cursor editor and agent workflows, reducing tool switching and improving agent-driven development efficiency. Two-way synchronization allows teams to trial the new platform without abandoning GitHub, enabling gradual adoption. For teams that heavily rely on AI-assisted coding, native agent support could materially speed iterations.

2. Impact on Cursor and the SpaceX ecosystem Origin helps expand Cursor from a single editor into an integrated platform covering hosting, collaboration and agents, increasing user retention and data closure. Under SpaceX, the platform may gain stronger infrastructure and long-term resource support while serving internal SpaceX engineering needs.
